Posted on: 21 September 2023
The strategy, ‘Transforming healthcare and creating a better future for all’ outlines an exciting new chapter for the school with a renewed focus on research, education and societal engagement for the next 7 years.
The new plan will facilitate the School of Nursing and Midwifery to realise its potential and ambition for the two professions, while strengthening partnerships with health service providers and enabling inter-professionality in education and health care practice. The plan has been drawn up after more than 2 years of reflection and consultation with staff, students, alumni, practitioners, researchers and policymakers.
Guided by the core values of justice, inclusion, dignity and respect for the person, community and belonging, the plan seeks to champion sustainability and innovation in healthcare.

The school encourages creative thinking and a commitment to advancing knowledge through innovative inquiry and a love of learning. Their research is grounded in the ability to question, to imagine alternatives and to produce novel solutions. The School of Nursing and Midwifery has been a leader in the development and conduct of research and innovation. The School’s work has been recognised nationally and internationally and has led to evidence-based practice changes, informing of policy and development of new ways to address challenges in health and social care.
Speaking at the launch, Dr. Fintan Sheerin, Head of School, said:
‘This strategic plan is the culmination of more than 2 years of work, involving all sectors of the School as well as advice from international experts. It is a clear statement of where we see the School of Nursing and Midwifery in the coming decade. We are confident that the paths set out for research, education and global engagement will ensure that the School is ready to respond to the needs of a changing health care reality. In this, we will continue to be national and international leaders in nursing and midwifery but our graduates will also bring that leadership to the health care systems, imbued with, and driven by the values of compassion, care and equality that are so central to our ethos.’
Professor Sharon O’Donnell, Director of Research at the School, said:
“I am delighted to introduce highlights from the Research Strategy for the School of Nursing and Midwifery. The initiatives outlined in our Research Strategy are ambitious however they are informed by current and future health & social care challenges. The School of Nursing and Midwifery aims to meet these challenges head-on. We are committed to nurturing the next generation of researchers and building even greater capacity in the areas of care that are particularly important to us- these include children's health, maternal care, ageing, intellectual disability, mental health, cancer and healthcare innovation.
Our approach to research transcends conventional metrics; it is firmly rooted in engagement and in a framework that emphasizes impacts that extend to the heart of what matters most. Working closely with our key stakeholders, we will continue to co-create research questions and define outcomes that hold genuine meaning and significance. As we put these plans into action, the School of Nursing and Midwifery will collectively support our researchers to make significant contributions to transform healthcare both nationally and internationally.”
