The 30th anniversary of the decriminalisation of homosexuality in Ireland will be marked by a conference organised by the School of English in partnership with Gay Community News and Poetry Ireland.

The event is taking place in Trinity Long Room Hub Arts and Humanities Research Institute on Thurs, 8 June (9am – 6pm). It will bring together scholars, activists, archivists and writers from across the fields of history, legal studies, religion, art history, literary studies and gender studies to reflect on the events preceding and following the decriminalisation of homosexuality in Ireland.

Featuring a wide range of speakers, the event will chart the history and impact of this historic moment, as well as give a chance for reflection on the current challenges to LGBTQ+ equality, according to Dr Seán Hewitt, Assistant Professor in Literary Practice, who has co-organised the event with colleague Dr Tom Walker, Associate Professor in Irish Writing.

The event will be opened by Provost Dr Linda Doyle. Panellists will include Ivana Bacik, Anne Mulhall, Amanullah de Sondy and Kieran Rose.

A discussion on History and the Archive will be chaired by Dr Carole Holohan, School of Histories and Humanities. Prof David Kenny, School of Law, will chair a session on Rights, Justice and the Law. Dr Miranda Fay Thomas, School of Creative Arts, will chair a panel on Media and Representation and Dr Seán Hewitt, School of English, will host a writers roundtable featuring  readings by some of Ireland's finest LGBTQ+ writers, including Mary Dorcey, William Keohane, Gail McConnell and Diarmuid Hester.

This is a hybrid conference. Registration details and the full programme available on the Trinity Long Room Hub website
