2011 Journal of Postgraduate Research Launched

Sarah Kenny, a postgraduate student at the School of Psychology, received the award for ‘Best Paper’ at the recent launch of Volume 10 of the Journal of Postgraduate Research.  The paper, entitled ‘Evaluations of a Sexualised Fashion Doll by Young Girls Aged 6 to 8 Years’, formed part of Sarah’s studies for a Higher Diploma in Psychology.  The Journal of Postgraduate Research, which is published annually by the Graduates’ Students Union (GSU), aims to showcase the scope of Trinity College’s research talent.

Three papers were shortlisted for the ‘Best Paper’ award and the authors of each presented their work during the launch event.  The two runners up included Eoin O’Driscoll of the School of Engineering for his paper entitled ‘Quantifying Electrical Energy Consumption in Manufacturing Process Chains’, and Stephen Lucek of the School of Linguistic, Speech and Communication Sciences for his paper entitled ‘I came up and I seen this haze of smoke, like”: How Irish are Invariant Tags?’.

The Journal of Postgraduate Research is an academic peer reviewed journal that is authored, edited and produced by postgraduate students in College.  This year’s edition looked at pushing disciplinary boundaries and featured an invited paper from Associate Professor of Operations Management at the School of Business Paul Coughlan entitled Interdisciplinarity and the Role of the Innovation Academy in Doctoral Education.

Speaking at the launch, Chancellor of the University Dr Mary Robinson commented on the importance of student publications in College for the dissemination of scholarship.  Dr Robinson also praised the Graduate Students’ Union for their work on the publication and the Dean of Graduate Studies, Professor Veronica Campbell for her involvement and dedication to the Journal.  Dearbháil Lawless, President of the Graduate Students’ Union noted that the Journal of Postgraduate Research showcases the intellect of some of Trinity’s finest students from across the College’s three faculties.

The publication is supported by the Alumni Annual Fund, the Dean of Graduate Studies and the Provost.
