€20,0000 Raised by S.O.C.K. for Ovarian Cancer Research in Trinity

A cheque for €20,0000 for ovarian cancer research in Trinity was recently presented to Dean of Research, Professor Vinny Cahill and Professor John O’Leary, Chair of Pathology and Cancer Champion in Trinity by Imelda Keating, Clare Keating, Dearbhla Bayle and Shane Tobin. The four volunteers represent the organisation Supporting Ovarian Cancer Knowledge (SOCK), which is dedicated to the issues of ovarian cancer. Each of them has had personal experiences of ovarian cancer through family and friends with this devastating disease and they have been raising funds through a variety of activities.

Professor John O'Leary is Chair of Pathology at Trinity and a clinician scientist who has over 400 publications (170+ peer reviewed papers, 250 published abstracts, 28 book chapters and 3 books) with publications in Nature, Nature Medicine, Nature Immunology, The Lancet, PLoS One etc. He leads a multi-investigator unit at Trinity, composed of 41 scientists who work in the area of ovarian cancer and other cancers.

Supporting Ovarian Cancer Knowledge (SOCK) was the brainchild of the late Jane Keating. Following her diagnosis with ovarian cancer, Jane wanted to do something positive as there was limited information available to women about ovarian cancer. Jane approached a number of her friends and family and suggested that a charity be formed. Supporting Ovarian Cancer Knowledge (SOCK) was founded in early 2010 as a non-profit organisation dedicated to raising funds for research into and awareness of ovarian cancer.
