Trinity Basketball travelled to Scotland from September 19-21 to take part in the Edinburgh Invitational Tournament, taking on the University of Edinburgh, University of Glasgow, and UCD.  The weekend not only offered high-level competition but also served as a great bonding trip for both squads.

The men’s team, coached by Eric Brandt, claimed strong wins against UCD and Edinburgh on Saturday. Newcomers Sam Rex and Jens Örnehed made an immediate impact, with Rex exploding for 36 points against Edinburgh and finishing the weekend as Trinity’s top scorer. Backed by strong performances by Thomas McCourt and Daniel O’Toole, Trinity advanced to the Sunday final despite a narrow loss to Glasgow in the last game of the group stage. Eric Brandt’s coaching throughout the weekend was exceptional, constantly providing support and great tactical adjustments for the squad. In a rematch against Glasgow in the final, a fatigued Trinity squad fought hard in a back-and-forth affair but ultimately fell 93-83 to Glasgow, finishing runners-up in the tournament.

The women’s team, coached by Riona Grealy, faced tough challenges against UCD and Edinburgh in their opening games but showed remarkable resilience. Despite losing by 9 in the end, the girls showcased incredible determination and passion mounting a 20 point comeback against the hosts in their first game. Avelina Moley Stoltz was a tournament standout, delivering multiple 32-point games with deadly shooting from beyond the arc. On Sunday, against Edinburgh’s 2nd team, the team closed their campaign on a high with an emphatic 92-33 win. Inspired by Coach Riona Grealy, the girls played some beautiful team basketball centred around passing and cutting with five players hitting double digits in scoring in the game.

Beyond the results, the trip proved to be an invaluable experience with all players enjoying their first trip abroad with the club. From team bonding off the court to on-court battles, players built memories and chemistry that will carry into the season. Both squads return to Dublin with confidence and momentum as they prepare for their College League campaigns beginning in early October.
