Bridge to College Students Make a Difference Through Leadership Projects Thursday, 9th May 2024 Exam Hall, Trinity College Dublin 10:00 am - 12:00 pm Over 360 secondary school students from underrepresented communities in Ireland recently completed leadership projects focused on the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as part of the Bridge to College programme. Run by Trinity Access Programmes, Bridge to College aims to provide learning experiences for students to become confident learners through the use of technology and teamwork. The programme helps students from communities underrepresented at university, such as those attending DEIS schools, develop skills and experience to progress to third-level education. As part of the programme, students complete a Leadership Project based on one of the 17 SDGs set out by the UN. The projects allow the students to actively participate in social change, give back to their community, and learn how they can contribute to a sustainable world. At the showcase students will present their leadership projects to industry leaders, academic professionals, and innovators in sustainability. Projects include a campaign to reduce single-use plastics, a fundraiser for homelessness services, biodiversity workshops for young children, and a ‘positive potato’ initiative to promote mental health awareness. Through their projects, students gain valuable skills such as communication, critical thinking, teamwork, and project management that will benefit them in their transition to third-level education and beyond. The winning students will present their projects to members of the Oireachtas in Leinster House and will be hosted by The Green Party. The students will also get a very special tour of Dublin Zoo learning more about sustainability and the environment.  “It is really inspiring to see young people playing an active role in tackling climate change and community development. As we face the challenges of climate change, we must ensure a just transition that brings communities with us. Projects like these highlight how we can do just that. The students’ interest in environmental action gives me great confidence about the future of our country and our planet.” – Deputy Patrick Costello
